Join the Journey: A Step-By-Step Approach to More Accessible Courses

At NC State, accessibility is not just a standard – it’s a shared value. This fall, DELTA is offering a new opportunity for instructors to ensure that all members of the Pack can access and engage with their course content. The Join the Journey to More Accessible Course Materials workshop series is a weekly, hands-on series designed to help instructors make small, sustainable changes that have a big impact on the classroom.
Whether you teach online, hybrid or in-person courses using tools like Moodle, Google Docs, Microsoft Office and Panopto, this series will help you take concrete steps toward improving accessibility – one file, video or page at a time.
And creating accessible course materials doesn’t have to be overwhelming. DELTA’s instructional design and technology experts have developed this series to meet instructors where they are. Each session covers essential best practices in digital accessibility, walks participants through common tools and built-in checkers, and offers hands-on time to practice on their own course materials.
“Instructors don’t have to do everything all at once,” says Jill Anderson, workshop facilitator and senior instructional technology with DELTA. “Our goal is to help you build a foundation – and a process – that you can apply over time, across your courses.”
Workshop Topics: Practical Skills with Immediate Payoff
Each workshop session in the series provides:
- Step-by-step guidance on essential digital accessibility skills
- Live demonstrations of Moodle, Google, Microsoft, Panopto and other tools
- Real-time support from DELTA experts
- Hands-on time to check and fix your own course content
Workshops are open to all NC State instructors, teaching assistants, instructional designers and accessibility advocates. Sessions are designed to be beginner-friendly and practical – with space for questions, reflection and exploration. Whether you’re uploading PDFs or designing lecture slides, these sessions can help you do it more accessibly.
Registered participants will receive recordings of each session, allowing you to revisit the content at your convenience.
Make the Most of the Tools You Already Use
You don’t have to start from scratch. Many of the digital tools NC State instructors already use have built-in features to support accessibility. This series will help you uncover those capabilities and use them more effectively.
- Learn how to use Microsoft and Google tools to format documents accessibly
- Make Panopto videos more inclusive with captions and transcripts
- Ensure your Moodle course content is clear, navigable and screen-reader friendly
- Use accessibility checkers to find and fix issues before students encounter them
- … and more
“We want instructors to leave each session feeling empowered,” says Anderson. “When you make one small improvement to a document, slide or video, it can make a huge difference for a student.”
A Community of Practice – and Progress
Accessibility is a key part of NC State’s commitment to inclusive, high-quality learning. The Join the Journey to More Accessible Course Materials series is part of DELTA’s ongoing mission to support innovative, student-centered teaching at NC State. This workshop series invites instructors to learn alongside colleagues from across disciplines, creating space for dialogue, discovery and mutual support.
